Subject: Postcard From Portland
Hi all,
Another long overdue, and hopefully not boring, Pcard from Pdx...
The big news is that Liz & I just celebrated our 1 year wedding
anniversary. We're experiencing first-hand Einstein's theory of
relatives - being in love warps the space/time continuum. We feel like
we've known each other forever, yet just met last week. We spread the
festivities over two weekends. Last night we used the 'paper' gift I
gave Liz - box seats to the Portland Opera. We saw Puccini's Turandot -
a complex love story set in China. I'm not as much of an opera buff as
Liz - this is the second opera I've seen. We were both mesmerized and
moved. It was a wonderful night out. Last weekend we went to Cannon
Beach, an artsy/yuppie town on the Oregon Coast and home to Haystack
Rock - one of the largest monoliths in the US. We stayed in a B&B
run by a cute German couple. The husband baked a half-dozen varieties
of bread for us. He's been baking for over 40 years and is a master of
his craft. We spent the day Saturday browsing the art galleries,
shopping for bargains (we found a few!) and eating. Had a wonderful
seafood dinner. On Sunday we slept late, had French toast w/some of
that wonderful homemade potato bread :-) and then stopped at a music
store to check out something I had spied in their window after closing
time on the previous day. It's a gorgeous looking and sounding
*crystal* flute with a tall ship etched into it and embellished in 24k
gold. Liz treated me to it - and what a treat it is! I wish you all
could hear it.
Other news...
We had our first visitors a few weeks ago. Liz's parents came up for
the weekend. We showed them around town a bit, stuffed ourselves like
pigs - including the mandatory seafood feast at Jakes with a trip
across the street to Powell's Books, and generally enjoyed each other's
company. So when are the rest of you coming up!?
My job at ADP is going very well. I'm getting comfortable with Unix and
C. I'm signed up for 'boostershot' classes (training on ADP's nickel)
this month in Unix, C and Korn shell. I've been very busy - they have
high expectations. Staying organized is a very necessary skill since
you're expected to have several irons in the fire.
Liz's job is also going well. She's been very busy, too. She enjoys the
nature of the work and her associates at work. She's training a CFY
(speech therapist intern) in addition to her other responsibilities.
We're experiencing something foreign to southern California - a change
of seasons. The weather has turned cooler (we've started using the
heater), the leaves are starting to turn yellow and red - and the rainy
season has commenced. One thing that makes the rain tolerable is that
it is accompanied by the most incredibly beautiful clouds I've ever
witnessed.
Future plans...
Next weekend we're off to San Francisco to join in the 90th birthday
celebration for Liz's grandmother. If ever I've met someone who could
be described as 'not having a mean bone in their body' it's Grandma
Maxinne!
until next time...
