Subject: Postcard from Portland
Hi all,
When last we left our heroes, they we're journeying to San Francisco to
join in Grandma Maxine's 90th birthday bash. A fun time was had by
all. Prior to the party, mailers had been sent to the birthday girl's
family and friends, near and far, asking for a recent picture (w/dog a
+) and an anecdote, story or memory involving her. There was 100%
response and a thick and beautifully rendered scrapbook was fashioned
by Liz's mom, aunt and cousins. It was quite overwhelming and almost
too much for Grandma Maxine to take. She was quite literally at a loss
for words.
Our jobs continue to be rewarding and enjoyable. Sandy's been getting
plenty of OJT (the boostershot classes we mentioned in the last PfP).
Last Tuesday Sandy tied Judge Ito for 2nd place at the ADP Halloween
costume contest - as a medieval minstrel, replete with fife.
Last weekend we finally made it to the Columbia River Gorge - still in
time to see the fall foliage. It's only 40 minutes from where we live!
Crown Point is a spit of land that juts out over the gorge and provides
vistas from 700' above the Columbia River. We parked the car there and
got out and were nearly swept off the cliff by a gale force wind. It
was unexpectedly cold as well, so we stayed only long enough to admire
the incredible view and marvel at the lunatics windsurfing on the river
below us! We continued along the scenic drive, stopping at the
waterfalls - a half dozen in all. Most were visible from the road -
some required a short, easy hike (none more than a mile). We stopped at
the lodge at Multnomah Falls and had an early supper. Homemade soup,
homemade bread and a huge salad enjoyed by a large fire-stoked hearth
and views of the woods. They served us an extra loaf of bread which we
took home and used for French toast yesterday - Mmmmm.
The weather has taken a decided turn towards the tempestuous side.
We've been using the heat on a regular basis. Two nights ago the
temperature here dipped down to 32. It plummeted to 1 (you read it
right) in Burns, OR - which is in the high desert in the center of the
state. Mt. Hood, which looms large on the horizon and has snow at the
summit the year round, is frocked in it's winter whites with its
hemline down to around 1500'. Today was the stereotypical Portland
porridge of clouds, rain, wind and virtually no sun. We celebrated by
Liz getting ear muffs and Sandy getting a polyester maximum thermal
retention fleece jacket :-)
We'll be getting our first non-parental southland visitor in two
weeks. Steve Gill will be coming up with his friend Cris and we're
looking forward to showing them the sights and sharing with them some
local brews and seafood! Bring some warm and waterproof clothes,
Steve!!
We'll be celebrating Turkeyday in Pdx this year due to Liz having to
work. It will be the first Thanksgiving we haven't spent with one of
our families in a long, long time. We'll miss them tremendously. But
we're thankful to be so lucky in love - and well provisioned in our
warm home.
Drop us a line and let us know how you're doing. Until next time...
love,
Sandy & Liz
