Subject: Postcard from Portland
Dear family and friends, Greetings from the frozen tundra! We've just had another ice storm. It was not as significant as the one we had in December, but more then enough to make any travel treacherous. Vigilant of the vis major, I shopped for victuals yesterday. Of course, everyone else had the same idea - the traffic was intense. I barely made it home ahead of the worst of the storm. Liz had to work yesterday, so she was relieved of prospecting for provisions - and relieved to see me arrive home! We celebrated our safety with a sacrifice of stuffed salmon and a potation of Pinot Gris. Last weekend was wintry as well. We awoke Saturday (1/28) to an inch or two of fresh fallen snow. It continued to snow and by 3pm we had accumulated a good six inches. Liz had wisely stopped on the way home Friday and purchased a snow shovel, which I put to good use in clearing the driveway. The last time I needed to do *that* was 13 years ago! Liz felt guilty that I wouldn't let her help, but managed to get over it. Having grown up in Philly and lived in New England for a dozen years, a snowstorm was no novelty to me. But for Liz it was occasion for a second childhood. She busied herself building a snowman (replete with scarf and cap) and then conscripted the trash can lid for sled duty. The snow was absolutely perfect for snowballs, so naturally we had to succumb to the temptation to hurl a few. Dodger (our neighbor's Golden Retriever) came over to join in the fun - he likes to play fetch with snowballs (he actually finds and brings them back). The way January started out, I didn't think there would be much weather worthy of mention. It was wet and warmer than usual. In fact, there was concern that we'd have a drought this summer since the snow pack on Mount Hood was melting too soon. But the arctic storm track returned and the temperatures plummeted into the low teens. (Okay, okay, I can hear the Rudins and Rich Ahrens saying that would be a *heat wave* by Minnesota standards :-). Within a period of two weeks the snow base at Timberline Lodge went from 45" to 145". It was actually sunny here from Wednesday through yesterday morning, which gave us a chance to revel in the view we have. Yesterday's sunrise behind Mount Hood was a fresco of fire and ice. Other than that, there's not much else to report. Liz's job continues to go well. I'm on loan for a month to the QA group, which is doing customer simulation testing on our new software release. It's a bit boring, but it gives me a chance to learn some Unix administration and get a better feel for our product offerings. This month Liz and I will be celebrating the two year anniversary of our engagement (Valentine's Day)!! We'll be going to a fine restaurant the weekend before. Last year we revisited Pascal (the scene of the crime :-), but we'll have to break with tradition now that we've moved. There's a French restaurant in Vancouver, Washington that sounds good (it's in the Entertainment Book) and we'll be giving a try. BTW - today is Shelly & Mitch's 36th wedding anniversary!! So...
I plan on adding some more links to my home page this month. If you've
already stopped by for a visit, it'll be a reason to come back! And if
you haven't taken a look, whaddya waitin' for?!
Until next month - stay warm and be well.
Love,
Sandy & Liz
