Subject: Postcard from Portland
Dear Family and Friends,
Greetings and warmest wishes for a happy Passover / Easter (as may be
appropriate for you and your family).
Liz and I have had enough of the weather in Portland and are going to
move to Las Vegas where we are confident we'll find work in the
casinos.
(April Fool)
Seriously, we have finally gotten a respite from all the wild winter
weather and are seeing the signs of spring. Cherry trees are flowering
and daffodils and tulips are shooting up nearly everywhere you look.
This is _not_ to say that there have been _no_ weather anomalies -
after all, this *is* Portland. We had a brief episode of hail and snow
a week ago. Liz has not yet had her studded tires swapped with the
normal ones. We'll wait a couple more weeks before we'll trust the
weather *that* much.
We have, however, emerged from hibernation. Liz & I have started to
take walks outside again, which we much prefer to the dreary and
dreaded treadmill.
We also attended a couple of events. The first one was a basketball
game - Trailblazers vs. LA Clippers. Not exactly a battle of the titans
:-) But it was free (I won the tickets in the ADP lottery) and it was
Liz's first live hoop-la. Except for some unruly children accompanied
by their mulish mother seated behind us, we had fun. The Blazers even
had the good fortune to win a game!
The other event featured a much better behaved audience. We had the
pleasure of seeing (and hearing) James Galway (with Phillip Moll on
piano) in a flute recital of French composers - Schubert, Faure, Widor,
Briccialdi and Doppler. We were totally enraptured, floating away on
the euphoric intonations of his flute and charmed by his humorous
repartee before each selection. He graciously stayed for *four*
encores, including an Irish suite for penny whistle composed by Henry
Mancini, which he played on his "little toy", a $400 'tin' whistle made
in North Carolina (go figure). The finale was a wonderfully melancholy
performance of Danny Boy which left everyone misty-eyed, followed by a
stirring rendition of Flight of the Bumblebee.
This past month we were also treated to a spectacle we never knew
existed. On the morning of March 8th Liz and I witnessed the most
remarkable sunrise. Mount Hood was framed in orange and pink clouds and
cast an inverted-V shadow on them as the sun rose behind the mountain.
Unfortunately, there was insufficient light to capture the scene on
film :-(
Lastly, in the ol' gray mare department, I turned 49 on March 20th. Liz
showered me with (too many) gifts and treated us to dinner at Hunan
Pearl - one of the finer Chinese restaurants in the area. The affection
with which she showers me on a daily basis, however, is the real pearl
in my life. It makes time stand still, and thus keeps me young.
And on that note, I'll bring to a close another Postcard from Portland
with wishes that your April showers are equally loving. Many of you
we'll be seeing soon as we'll be flying to Boca Raton early tomorrow
morning to spend Passover with the Herring/Woldoff/Pregel/Frank clan.
all our love,
Sandy & Liz
