Subject: Postcard from Portland
Dear Family and Friends,
We know you've all been anxiously awaiting the news! Well, guess what?!
So are we! Liz's due date was yesterday, but lil' "E" apparently has
other ideas. At last Wednesday's OB checkup, Dr. Lopez did a cervical
and could tell that lil' "E" has dropped and is at 0 station, Liz is 100%
effaced - but still just fingertip dilated. She's been having some cramps
and Braxton Hicks contractions, with an occasional real one thrown in for
good measure. So the time *is* obviously approaching for lil' "E"s eagerly
awaited début. Although it's easy to slip into the mindset of...
PATIENCE, n. A minor form of despair, disguised as a virtue.
--Ambrose Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary"
...we have instead been trying to focus on...
"The strongest of all warriors are these two -- Time and Patience."
--Leo Tolstoy
...and...
"Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet."
--Aristotle
Liz's last day of work was Halloween. She had decorated an oversized
orange sweatshirt and was The Great Pumpkin - a role she filled out
nicely ;-) Last year, I had worn my suit to work as a costume. Normally,
the attire at ADP is jeans and tee shirts - so this caused a bit of a
stir. I could not convince people it was a COSTUME and I was *not* going
out on an interview. So this year I wore the tuxedo which had previously
belonged to Liz's Dad. While we were in California for his memorial
service, Liz's Mom had the men in the family select which of Bill's
clothing they wanted. The tux didn't fit any of Liz's cousins, but was
perfect on me. My attire totally wigged out my coworkers. I calmly
explained, "The name is 'Bond', James Bond." I don't know what I'll do
next year. I guess I could start over and go in my birthday suit! Liz
and I had fun passing out candy to the neighborhood gremlins and
watching their eyes open wide when the saw her girth.
Yesterday, Liz's Mom arrived to join our vigil. Liz and I met her at the
gate, so we had to pass through the airport security. The woman who
examined Liz's purse asked her when she was due. Liz said, "Today." The
security guard gasped, "I hope you're not flying!" She was relieved to
hear we were there to meet Priscilla <grin>.
Last night we started to catch up on conversation and then took
advantage of our stay of parenthood by going out to O'Conners for a
delightful dinner. Liz and I have been eating out every chance we get.
It won't last! It will be a big help to have her Mom here to help out -
especially in the kitchen. My Mom will be coming after Thanksgiving to
pick up where Liz's Mom left off.
I've very nearly finished my project at work. If lil' "E" waits until
Wednesday, I should be able to put the wraps on it. Liz enjoyed having
last week off. She went out to lunch with friends. And went shopping!
But now everything is ready for our daughter, so it's time for the next
act! We'll let you all know as soon as possible when the curtain has
gone up.
Until then...
we love and miss you all,
Sandy, Liz and lil' E_Max
