Subject: Postcard from Portland

Dear Family and Friends,

January was ushered out by February's fanfares as the Olympic Games
replaced football on TV. Nonetheless, the focus of our lives is our
"full of grace" not-so-little girl. She's now up to over 13 pounds
(rough measure by our bathroom scale). Clothing which was once cavernous
is now snug. That's only fitting since she'll turn three months the day
after tomorrow. Around two weeks ago she decided to start sleeping
through the night, for which her mommy and daddy are eternally
grateful!! We had forgotten what that felt like. She typically goes down
around 9pm or so and wakes up around 4 or 5am (although this morning it
was more like *yawn* 3am). Her intake has increased to around 5 or 6 oz.
per feeding at mommy's pumping station, so she's able to cruise longer
between fillups. Her bottom is back to its original beauty and the
cradle cap is all but cured. Elisha has been getting quite vocal - she
has a comment on nearly everything (in the finest Herring tradition).
Watching (and listening) to her explore the world of vowels (mostly),
consonants (on occasion), and other sounds (raspberries are not far
off!) is much more fascinating than anything she's drowning out on the
tube. Her head control and strength have made marked strides. She is a
keen observer, watching our every move - and is quick to flash us her
orange slice shaped smile.

Her favorite activity, by far, is the changing table. Elisha is at her
most charming when she's naked. Her latest trick is raising her legs
into the air and bringing them down with a resounding *THUMP*! Her motor
coordination is really improving. She has started to reach out for and
grasp objects - usually clothing. If you know Liz, that's not
surprising. ;-)

Both Liz and I have now returned to work - at least in body. It's been a
difficult adjustment for us, to say the least. We're fortunate that
we've found such a good day care facility for our little girl. Sheila
has been calling us every day at work to fill us in on how Elisha is
doing. But the comfort of knowing she's in good hands hasn't made it any
easier to concentrate on our jobs. Nor has it changed the fact that we
both now work two full time jobs - Elisha being the second. At least we
have a freezer full of Momma Herring's homemade meals, which we've been
thoroughly enjoying.

I've FINALLY found time to get to Kinkos and scan in some more
photographs of our darling daughter. Browse on over to her home page at
http://www.herring.org/elisha.html - which we trust you'll enjoy
reading, and then follow the links to her photo gallery at the bottom of
the page. Note that each thumbnail photo can be clicked to reveal its
enlargement along with some accompanying text.

Valentine's Day will mark the 4th anniversary of our engagement. For the
first time since we've known each other, we're going to have to postpone
our celebration. The reality of being parents will require that we wait
until the 21st since we could not find a sitter for the 14th *sigh*.

With hopes that cupid comes calling on all of you, too...

we love and miss you all,
Sandy, Liz and Elisha

And that's the news from Portland
where everything is green, rolling stones gather moss,
and the rainfall is always above average.
