Subject: Postcard from Portland
Dear Family and Friends,
Time Marches on... February came and went in the blink of an eye. I had
thought age was the main cause of time warp, but I'm beginning to see
that solar revolutions pale as a "primum mobile" when compared to
parenting. Photos taken of Elisha just a month ago clearly prove the
theorem. Her growth spurt is probably the reason she's no longer
sleeping through the night. She typically is up around 2 or 2:30am for a
snack. Generally, she falls back to sleep within a half hour - but
sometimes decides to stay awake for two hours. That makes for a rough
work day for mommy and daddy!
She has progressed beyond the "ahgoo" stage and is now engaging in
"vocal play". Elisha is quite the communicator :-) In the past few days
she has discovered a talent for making raspberries - and does so
responsively with mommy and daddy. Our little girl now smiles at the
slightest provocation and has shown the beginnings of a laugh. We are
constantly amazed at, and thankful for, just how good-natured she is.
A few of her outfits no longer fit - ones which she was falling out of
two months ago. The changing table continues to be her favorite
activity, where she has made considerable progress in hand-to-hand
combat. She reaches out quite purposefully to grasp anything within
range.
Her head control and neck strength are very nearly fully developed.
Nothing escapes her vigilance - even things that don't exist! We will
sometimes notice her fixated on a (blank) spot on the ceiling. Oh that
she could tell us what we're missing! She is almost to the point of
turning from back to stomach. She can roll far enough to one side to
plant both of her knees on the floor and bury her face. All she needs is
to tuck her shoulder and she'll have turned the trick.
Work has been quite hard on the both of us. I'm in the midst of helping
to get into field test our most recent release and have had to work a
few weekends to stay on schedule. Liz has also had a demanding agenda.
Working and caring for Elisha has left precious little time for anything
else. We did, however, get out to dinner for the first time since last
November. On February 21st we celebrated (a week late) Valentine's Day -
and the fourth anniversary of our engagement - with a romantic dinner
for two at L'Auberge. You may recall that Liz and I dined there last
September to celebrate our third Wedding Anniversary. Our most recent
visit was every bit as pleasant and satisfying as the first. Liz had a
beautiful Filet Mignon and I regaled myself with the Sesame Encrusted
Salmon. Elisha stayed home with a baby sitter and did quite well. The
sitter (Dara) is the daughter of Sheila, the woman who cares for Elisha
during the week. Dara has had courses in child-care and infant CPR, so
we managed to enjoy our meal without worrying (too much). Our little
angel was fast asleep when we returned home from dinner.
I am embarrassed to say that there are no new photos of Elisha on her
web page. I promise to remedy that failure before next month's PfP. I
have, however, revamped (and renamed) her page. I guarantee a return
visit to...
http://www.herring.html/elisha.html
... will be worthwhile (or your money cheerfully refunded).
This month marks the one year jubilee of my tooth extractions (remember
them?) - and it's truly a joyous milestone since I completed the implant
procedure in February. The cornucopia of comestibles is once again on my
plate. Carrots! Apples! Corn on the cob (once it's in season ;-), et
cetera! Elisha has two tooth buds showing and is constantly shoving
whatever is nearby (usually her hand up to her knuckles) into her mouth.
She's also located her thumb. Sometimes she'll suck on both thumbs at
once. It probably won't be long before she's cutting her first teeth. We
intend to do what we can to encourage her to be a better custodian to
her cuspids than her father has been to his.
January and February more than compensated for last December's relative
drought. There was only one day during the month that had no rain - and
it was the first such day this year. But we did have sun breaks between
the showers - and some of the most glorious rainbows we've ever
witnessed.
Before we leave you this month, Elisha has some thoughts she'd like to
share...

reformat it to fit on the page.
we love and miss you all,
Sandy, Liz and Elisha
